Limits of Confidentiality (BC Counsellors)

Here’s a simple and clear version of the limits of confidentiality for Registered Clinical Counsellors (RCCs) and Canadian Certified Counsellors (CCCs) practicing in British Columbia.


What you share with your counsellor is private and confidential. However, there are some exceptions where your counsellor is legally or ethically required to share information:


  • Risk of Harm – If you disclose that you intend to seriously harm yourself or someone else.
  • Abuse or Neglect of a Minor – If there is a concern that a child (under 19) is being abused or neglected, your counsellor must report this.
  • Court Order/Subpoena – If counselling records are ordered to be released by a judge.
  • Abuse of a Vulnerable Adult – If there are concerns about abuse, neglect, or exploitation of an adult who cannot seek help for themselves.
  • Supervision/Consultation – Counsellors may consult with other professionals to ensure you receive the best care. Your identity is protected as much as possible in these cases.
